Recent acquisitions

The Magnificent Mrs TennantQuite apart from the recent Birthday Bonanza, I’ve also acquired a few other Victorian treasures by various means.  After a 3 month battle, I have finally managed to spend a Waterstone’s gift card on David Waller’s The Magnificent Mrs. Tennant: The Adventurous Life of Gertrude Tennant, Victorian Grande Dame.  Waller is an alumnus of Birkbeck College, my current seat of learning, so I’m hoping his example will spur me on to similar achievements.  The eponymous Mrs Tennant was a celebrated London hostess who enjoyed an astonishing lifespan, being born just after Queen Victoria, and dying towards the end of World War One.

Unsurprisingly, there have been a few Florence Marryat acquisitions, mainly rather utilitarian reprints: Too Good for Him, On Circumstantial Evidence and A Bankrupt Heart.  They’re not very pretty, but will save at least half a dozen trips to the British Library.  One notable exception is a gorgeous leather-bound edition of The Prey of the Gods, which I tracked down in Germany.

Finally, the book currently intimidating me from the top shelf is Feminism and the Final Foucault, which I’m hoping will help me with the critical framework for my thesis.  I’m quite partial to Monsieur Foucault, but apparently he’s a bit Old Hat these days.  The feminist re-evaluation of his work might provide some more contemporary insights, however.  We shall see.

Hello,

As I was searching info on Florence Marryat, I found these notes so if you can help me here I would greatly appreciate it.
I found an old brown paper cover edition of “on circumstantial evidence” with no date or index of chapters, just other books advertised in the back of recent publications by different publishing companys. Is this a rare book or is it of any value at all?

Thanks very much,
David Crews
