The Page 56 Meme

by catherine on October 13, 2009

I’ve just purloined this meme from Kirsty at Other Stories:

  • Grab the nearest book.
  • Open it to page 56.
  • Find the fifth sentence.
  • Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

Don’t dig for your favourite book, the coolest book, or the most intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

I happen to be tinkering with an edition of George Gissing’s first novel, Workers in the Dawn, so it was perched a few inches away from me.  Thank goodness it was slightly closer than my JavaScript manual, else this would have been a very dull post.  Anyway, the fifth sentence is:

“As Arthur sat in his dark hiding-place, the drawing-room door happened to be opened whilst this lady was playing.”

I shall be reviewing the book soon, once I’ve got through all 800 pages…

What edition of Workers in the Dawn do you have? I have three.

Hello Markus. I have the Harvester Press edition from 1985. I am publishing a new critical edition with Dr Debbie Harrison, hopefully before the end of the year. I’m impressed you have three editions – it’s a rare beastie! How do you think it ranks in the Gissing canon?

I have the 1935 American first edition, the 1968 AMS Press edition, and the Harvester Press edition, but not first English edition. It is one of my favourite books. The scenes between Arthur and Carrie are immensely powerful and anticipate Philip and Mildred in Maugham’s Of Human Bondage.
