The number of “Recent acquisitions” posts has been declining recently, which means I’ve clearly been a good girl and maintained my resolution to buy fewer books. Such is my unassailable virtue, I haven’t even parted with cash for the two I’m about to share with you.
A drum roll is in order to announce the arrival of a very rare beastie, namely a modern edition of a Florence Marryat novel. Valancourt Books is to be heartily congratulated for unleashing The Blood of the Vampire this month. Out of print for over 100 years, this is a title that was crying out to be resurrected. Published in 1897, it was rather overshadowed by a certain other vampire novel that appeared in the same year. In this case, we have a female vampire, who is the daughter of a mad scientist and a voodoo priestess, and has the unfortunate habit of draining the life out of those she loves. It looks like a corker. Even better, I bought it with a book voucher.
The other book to land on my doormat is a review copy of Biography: A Very Short Introduction, the latest addition to this marvellous series from OUP. It is from the pen of Hermione Lee, who is of course a master (or mistress) in this field, having written acclaimed studies of Virginia Woolf and Edith Wharton, among others. I shall report back shortly…

Well, even I thought it was a tad saucy!
Meanwhile, if you want to read a really good lady vampire story, try E. F. Benson’s “Mrs Amwoth,” which you can find here:
