Father Christmas very cleverly stayed within budget by unearthing a couple of charity shop treats. Susan Hill’s The Mist in the Mirror is a very spooky neo-Victorian mystery. I shall not allow myself to be put off by the fact that the Daily Mail gave it a rave review, and shall instead enjoy it with a glass of Sherry over the festive period. I’ve only just recovered from having seen Hill’s The Woman in Black over 15 years ago. I would advise theatre-goers not to sit next to the speaker at the back, else you’ll be obliged to pop out to M&S for a change of undies.
I also found Balzac’s Eugenie Grandet in my stocking. After having discovered the delights of his compatriots Zola and Maupassant, I’m hoping to find their literary forefather equally captivating.
