Christmas Acquisitions

Well, it’s been a book-filled Christmas, which is, of course, the best kind.  Trollope was well represented in the form of He Knew He Was Right, Phineas Redux and Rachel Ray.  I’m particularly looking forward to reading the latter after it was so highly praised by KirstyThe Disastrous Mrs Weldon was a very welcome gift (thank you, darling)  as I was unaware the biography existed.  I was introduced to this feisty woman during my MA, and was in awe of her bravery in challenging both the lunacy laws and patriarchal abuses of power.  There was also a hearty greeting for Douglas Jerrold, who has been languishing on my Wish List for a number of years.

I am making a rare foray into the 20th Century with Lucy Moore’s Anything Goes: A Biography of the Roaring Twenties and A N Wilson’s After the Victorians.  The latter is my current read.  Its predecessor, The Victorians, was a masterly work and even made it into Kirsty’s Top Ten for 2008.  So far, it is certainly not disappointing.

Sarah Maitland’s A Book of Silence also appeared under the tree.  I’ve heard a few recent interviews with the author and she sounds as mad as a stick.  I suspect I’ll either love this book or hate it.  Having grown up on the Heathrow flightpath, silence is a distinctly intangible concept.

I’m now off to do some more reading…
