Thank you to Kirsty for a pre-Christmas treat in the form of Mrs Dubberly’s War, the journal and letters of the wife of an officer serving in the Crimean War. She was the only army spouse to witness the entire conflict, and she chronicled the daily details of everything from the living conditions to the catastrophe of the Charge of the Light Brigade.
Her papers have been edited by Christine Kelly, an authority on the Crimean War. I did hear her talking about the book on Radio 4 a while ago and promptly forgot both her name and the title. I’m very pleased to now have the opportunity of reading it. A review will follow in the New Year, once I’ve emerged from the fug of mince pies and Twiglets. In the meantime, I have found a video interview with the author, who gives the distinct impression she prefers radio.
I’m hoping Father Christmas will pop some more books down the chimney tonight, so there could well be another post in the morning. In the meantime, a very Merry Christmas to anyone who happens to be reading.
